The Illinois Company organized a fur trade with Canada beginning in 1795 which led to increased activity at Mount Carmel In 1800, French explorer Simon Fraser reached the mouth of the Mississippi River where he discovered new territory including what is now Missouri In 1801, Francis Drake sailed past Missouri Rapids on his way downriver to found Fort Clatsop on theMississippi River near modern day Kansas City In 1802 , Thomas Jealousy surveyed much of present-day StLouis County before giving it its name it became part of Saint Louis County under American rule following victory over France at Battle Of Blackwater on October 6th ,1812 On January 1st ,1815 , John Brown attempted unsuccessfully to raid Harper’s Ferry Trading Post outside Independence MO while supplies were being transported across the Mississippi River . This event marked one of America’s earliest conflicts with Great Britain resulting in several casualties for both sides

She bequeathed it to her son John Fenton Hickey Jr., who developed it into an agricultural center with industries such as papermaking, cattle ranching, porkpacking and lumber production. In 1911 when railroad construction began through Morgan County, Excelsior Springs became one of several communities along the line established for workers during the boom period that followed World War I. At first it consisted of few buildings but by 1923 had become a busy industrial town with over 100 businesses employing more than 2,000 people employed directly or indirectly in manufacturing and other businesses activities including agriculture and transportation services During World War II Excelsior Springs became an important munitions plant providing materials for war effort including aircraft parts and ammunition Aftermath of world war II saw decline in this industry but later resurgence led to new development such as retail space Today local economy depends heavily on tourism which has helped revive many local businesses
