Excelsior Springs, Missouri is a small town located in Jackson County, Missouri. The population was 1,592 at the 2010 census. Excelsior Springs is home to the Excelsior Springs Elementary School and the Excelsior Springs High School. Excelsior Springs was founded by Adam Smith in 1824 and named after a Creek Indian village on the east side of theMissouri River. In 1845, three brothers founded a flour mill in Excelsior Springs to help feed their father's farm following his tractor-driven irrigation system failure. By 1870, there were six businesses in Excelsior Springs selling goods such as groceries, hardware, lumber, machine parts, and agricultural products. The mill closed in 1929 but reopened as an antique store in 1951 which continues to operate today. In 1955, Stroudsburg Community College (now Jefferson Community College) opened its doors with twelve students and one instructor for two years before being relieved of operations due to budget cuts. A new elementary school was built adjacent to the high school between 1984 and 1988 using $4 million from local taxpayers funds that were earmarked for community development projects such as streetscape renovation and park construction instead. The project included: a four-block long streetcape; addition of five classrooms; building of a basketball court; creation of a playground; and installation of more than thirty lighting fixtures throughout the school complex including stadium lights at each end zone - all while keeping traditional architecture features like Ionic columns intact. Today's Excelsiro Spring High School offers classes through eight departments including Arts & Sciences/Music Education/ Visual Arts/Linguistics/Pre-Law/ Business Administration/ Criminal Justice/Health Science with over 350 students enrolling daily across seven campuses across four states - Connecticut / Massachusetts / New York / Pennsylvania / Illinois . Today's economy thrives thanks to several industries that have presence within or near Excelsior Springs including health care services (Stroudsburg Community College), manufacturing (Excelsisor Spring Flour Mills Inc.), agriculture (Creek Land Bank Farms LLC), retail trade (Jared Weisburger Outlet Center), information technology (Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus), service providers (Bedrock Data Recovery Services LLP), transportation (King George Transportation Solutions LLC). Excelsior Springs, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Excelsior Springs began as a log cabin built by pioneers in 1836 on land that now includes much of what is today Excelsior Springs. The first settler in what is now Excelsior Springs was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1799 and named it after his home county, Ireland. In 1836, he and his family moved to this area and founded the first store there. By 1840, business had grown so much that Smith renamed the town Excelsior Springs after himself as well as his new settlement’s location on highgrounds above an already thriving rural community called Springdale which lay to the east and south of them. When General James WIlliamson invaded Missouri during the Mexican–American War in 1846, he discovered that Springdale had sided with Mexico and been looted by Confederate forces seeking to liberate it from Union control. When he realized this, Williamson ordered all Federal troops out of Springdale without waiting for orders from Washington D.C., which then occurred when Confederate General Robert Ewell rode into Springfield on horseback to demand satisfaction for burning homes and looting local businesses during their military campaign against Union forces two weeks earlier. As a result of these events, Springdale became an important strategic point for Confederate forces throughout their war efforts even though its residents voted not to secede from the United States until AFTER their state joined Confederacy anyway! In 1865, upon Jefferson Davis' fall from power following surrender at Appomattox Court House (two years earlier), Excelsior Springs saw increased civilian activity due to Reconstruction efforts led by Governor Thomas Dixon leading up to Radcliffe's return as President Ulysses S. Grant's Vice Presidential candidate in November 1865 replacing Hannibal Hamlin on that office - one year later! In 1870 (the same year that construction began on First National Bank Building) locals organized a school district which included present-day Excelsior Springs; under Superintendent Augustus Crain’s leadership over many years it grew rapidly through annexation of adjacent communities until reaching its peak enrollment around 1900 with 255 students inside its walls! A fire destroyed most of downtown Springfield early in 1904 but not before Grandview Elementary School opened within sight thereof having been founded just two years prior! Other nearby schools were soon rebuilt or replaced including High School (1892), Central High School (1914), Forest Park Elementary School (1928), Wellington Road Elementary School (1939) – all while keeping Grades 3-8 open concurrently across several blocks!!! This period also saw heavy industry arrive including Callaway Motors Manufacturing Company starting operations there in 1923 followed by Ford Motor Company starting production there too beginning operations late 1940’s thru early 1970’s!! Finally both Callaway Motors Manufacturing Company & Ford Motor Company closed shop here circa 1984 leaving behind little if any evidence remaining today except some scattered buildings along Wellington Road… however they are still operational 🙂 ! So yes – pretty impressive right?!? All told since 1800 people have lived/worked/visited/invested here making Excelsior Springs one heckuva place to call home 🙂
