The community was founded in 1871 by John Purdy and his family as Excelsior Springs Station on the Arkansas River. The name "Excelsior" was chosen because it sounded like a great place to live and work. Excelsior Springs grew quickly due to its location on the river and its proximity to other agricultural towns in central Missouri. In 1907, Excelsior Springs became an incorporated town with a government that included a mayor, two Aldermen, and six trustees. In 1912, the first post office opened in Excelsior Springs with George Haggerty as the first mailer. At that time, only men could send mail and there were no express rates for delivery outside of town limits. The first store in Excelsior Springs was built on Main Street in 1915 by Harry Alexander and his wife MaudieAlexander In 1921, Washington County bought land adjacent to what is now downtown from John Purdy for $10 per acre In 1927, voters decided to rename their community after President Calvin Coolidge because of his role in helping develop Kansas City into an American city The original courthouse still stands today and serves as the headquarters of the local history group known as "Old Town Explorer." In 1929-30 local officials constructed a new brick schoolhouse on Main Street which served as both homecoming center for local students during annual fair week (held every summer) and also functioned as court house during special sessions of the county board of commissioners During World War II many businesses closed due to lack of war production or demand; however some reopened after hostilities ended A new shopping mall called Valley Fair opened in 1984 across from Interstate 70 just south of where Excelsior had been since 1915 The population decreased until 2000 when it reached 1,481 when it increased again to 1,521 at the 2010 censusdue largely to migration from nearby Springfield .
