In 2016-2017 there were reports of increasing fire activity in the community which has driven up prices for homes in nearby areas such as Olivette and Mound City. Despite these challenges Excelsior Springs remains one of America’s most vibrant small towns with a rich history dating back to its founding days

Excelsior Springs, Missouri is a small town located in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1855 by settlers from Ohio who were looking for a new home after being driven out of their previous location by the Fayetteville and Fort Donelson Expedition. Excelsior Springs soon became known as a trading center for surrounding counties and as a place where farmers could buy goods necessary for their crops and animals. The first school in Excelsior Springs was opened in 1861 by Reverend J.H. Jacobson and it operated until 1865 when it was replaced by a log cabin schoolhouse which still stands today on Main Street. In 1871, Excelsior Springs boasted its own post office which remained in operation until 1907. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved to its current location on US-41 north of the town Limits Road. Today, Excelsior Springs remains an important community with many businesses and residents that continue to contribute to its unique culture and history. Some of the most famous residents of Excelsior Springs include Judge Royce Lamberth (1924-2002), author Lois Lowry (1948-2006), Congressman John Conyers (2001-2007), football player Archie Griffin (1985-2009) and internet entrepreneur Craig Newmark (1994-present).
The town of Excelsior Springs was founded in 1827 by Isaac N. Ishmael and his wife Sarah. The first post office was established in this town on November 12, 1827. It was called Liberty Station and served as a supply depot for the military during the American Civil War. The present-day downtown area of Excelsior Springs was built around the same time as the original town site. In 1885, John Halsey married Emma Sullivan, daughter of Major General Daniel Sullivan, who had also been mayor of Springfield, Missouri at the time. This marriage led to one of Excelsior Springs' most famous residents – John Halsey Sr., an USS Constitution captain who later became US Senator from Connecticut and Secretary of State under Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S Truman. In 1969, Excelsior Springs collectively dedicated itself to becoming a "Model Town" designated by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). This designation resulted in many new development projects being initiated such as a new high school that opened in 1974, an amphitheater which opened in 1978, and more recently a new street car line whichopened in 2006
