Excelsior Springs, Missouri is a town in Decatur County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Excelsior Springs were Daniel and Deborah Saunders who arrived in 1836. They founded a log cabin on the east side of the creek that flows through the town. The Cabin was destroyed by fire in 1839 but it served as a meeting place for early settlers until they built their first schoolhouse in 1840. In 1850, Benjamin Fenton purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land near Excelsior Springs from John Prentiss for $1,000 cash and he named it "Fenton's Prairie". This area became known as "Fenton's Forest" because it had many trees and wildflowers still remaining after more than fifty years of cultivation. John Murtaugh bought 584 acres (241 hectares) of land north of Excelsior Springs from Fenton in 1865 for $2,500 cash. He named it "Murtaugh's Prairie" because he thought it would be good farmland which could support cattle and horses. Murtaugh did not develop this land and sold it to James Cockerill in 1901 for $5,000 cash which made him one of the largest landowners in Excelsior Springs history. In 1914 Samuel French erected a new hotel called "French Hall" on what is now US-Route 68 just east of downtown Excelsior Springs. This hotel was designed by architect Horace Trumbauer and featured an indoor pool, gymnasium, sauna/ steam room and three stories with twenty rooms each up to 404 square feet (41 square meters). The original French Hall burned down on July 5th 1944 but its ruins remain today as part of Frenchman's Farm Park located off US-Route 68 between Old English Road and I-435 highway exit 112A). In 1938 Harry Wacker opened his store at 4444 S Highway 56 which became known as Wacker's Department Store until 1996 when Kmart took over that name then closed its doors permanently on October 6th 2002 after 146 years in business operation! Wacker’s Department Store continues to be open every day except Saturday at 9am since 1988 when its lease with Kmart expired! On October 6th 2002 Kmart closed its doors forever due to low sales so we will miss you all very much!
