Excelsior Springs, Missouri is a small town located in St. Francois County, Missouri. The population was 6,047 at the 2010 census. Excelsior Springs is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1851 and named for Excelsior Station on the Chicago and Kansas City Railway. The first post office in Excelsior Springs was established in 1852. In 1870, a school was built and named for Mrs. Hanna Capps (1826-1911). A church was built in 1893 and dedicated by Bishop James Hickey (1862-1937). In 1913, a cotton gin and five other mills were constructed along the McGhee River to improve production for local farmers. In 1922, a new courthouse replaced an earlier building that had been destroyed by fire. In 1951, the St Francois County Industrial Development Authority was created to promote industry in rural areas of St Francois County. It developed three industries: agricultural products, textiles and apparel manufacturing, and homebuilders/home improvement stores. The authority also built a shopping mall that opened in 1957 called Gateway Shopping Center. A new community center was built as part of Gateway Shopping Center in 1984 and renamed First United Methodist Church of Excelsior Springs after Reverend Druella Lohse (1912-1998). A high school named for Mrs. Hanna Capps (1826-1911) opened in 1986 adjacent to First United Methodist Church of Excelsior Springs; it closed School District No 154's doors following its closure during the fiscal year 2013-'14 due to budget cuts caused by Governor Jay Nixon's 2014 state budget proposal which eliminated all public education funding within Missouri's 534 districts statewide including Excelsior Springs School District No 154.).

Kapp purchased 640 acres of land around what is now downtown Excelsior Springs from David Herrin on October 3rd, 1871. He set up a store and tavern called the Herrin House which served as its headquarters until 1923 when he sold it to JH Stephenson who turned it into a movie theater called The Ark! After World War II, there were plans for the city to become an industrial center but those plans never came to fruition due to economic hardship during the Great Depression era. However, since 2007 through community partnerships with local businesses including restaurants, small businesses etc., Excelsior Springs has seen an resurgence in growth with new development being announced regularly throughout the City Council’s meeting agenda!
