Excelsior Springs is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Excelsior Springs was platted on August 10, 1866, by J.C.Bennett and A.Tiller. The name "Excelsior" comes from an old Indian word meaning "Heavenly Spring." The first post office in Excelsior Springs was established on February 14, 1867, by Wm. Hickey and wife Elmira Crouse Hickey. In 1871, James Fenton built a log cabin known as the "Fenton House." It served as a post office until it was discontinued in 1899 due to lack of customers or mail service from that point forward. In 1898 Newton Sutherlin erected a large frame house known as the "Sutherlin House," which he used as his home and business until his death in 1921. Mrs./Mrs.'n'Husband (Samuel) Gentry bought Mr./Ms.(Hannah) Sutherlin's house after her husband's death and continued to use it as their home until they sold it to Dr./Dr.'s wife Lillian Putney in 1938; she then used it as their primary residence until her death in 1984; it presently belongs to Mrs./Mrs.'n'Husband's son-in-law Michael Putney Jr.. In 1916 George Waring opened his grocery store at 4th & Olive Streets named after himself - George Washington Carver became one of its initial shareholders In 1923 the Post Office moved from Olive Street to 5th & Market Streets because of high housing costs near downtown St Louis On November 3rd 1924 Harry Rankin organized a group of citizens who desired consolidation of all post offices within 2 miles radius into one larger post office - this effort failed but rankin reorganized again with different goals in mind such as creating more jobs for local residents . This time success ensued when Rankin won permission from the Missouri State Board of Elections to open an additional post office at 7th & Euclid Avenue which opened on January 1st 1925 called simply "Rankin". At this location Rankin began providing express mail service between St Louis and Cairo for residents living outside that city limits . Upon Rankin's retirement effective September 15th 1927 he bequeathed all his businesses including his grocery store along with any equipment or furnishings not needed inside the newPost Office building back onto rankins heirs hand while alive - nowadays only trash cans remain inside building remnants knowledge that once building housed beautiful furniture also remains today chronicling what could have been had this historic structure been preserved&exactly how much money could have been saved if proper care were taken On October 29th 1957 two brothers named Leroy Anthony Neal selected Excelsior Springs as their new hometown after moving there from California during the McCarthy period trying to break into politics there After graduating college they started families here – Leroy worked at VA hospital IOWA CITY IL before becoming Vice President for Health Care Services for Johnson County MO under Governor John Connally During Nixon’s second termNeal ran unsuccessfully for Congress but kept up political activism being involved locally and nationally eventually becoming Chairman Emeritus since leaving government service In late 1990’93 he travelled down east coast “to see things happen” whenClinton announced plans for economic stimulus package including federal investment in Excelliors Springs through National Community Reinvestment Act legislation naming him chairperson Of Regional Subcommittee responsible For Economic Development And Affordability Within transcribing meeting minutes I am enclosing Thank you very much!
