In 1866, Excelsior Springs was founded as a log settlement by Andrew Johnson and his family. In 1927, Excelsior Springs became one of the first towns in Missouri to be electrified. With its new electricity supply, it became an important center for commerce and industry during the Great Depression era. Today, Excelsior Springs remains a vibrant community with a rich history that has been preserved through public education and cultural programming.

Excelsior Springs is a small town in Boone County, Missouri, United States. It was founded in 1839 by Methodist missionaries. The town was named for the Excelsior River. Excelsior Springs is located on the border of Boone and Crittenden counties. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Excelsior Springs first developed as a wagon stop on the route between St. Louis and Independence (now Kansas City). A sawmill and grist mill were built here in 1841-42 by Captain John Cramer and his son James Cramer, Jr.. The Post Office opened in 1843, but closed in 1865 due to financial troubles. A store opened here in 1848 called the Fenton House Store. In 1861, John Daugherty organized a lumber yard here and built a steamboat dock on the river for shipping logs across the Missouri River to be cut into boards or planks at his mill. In 1870 he erected an elegant white Gothic Revival house called "The Oaks" which still stands today as one of Excelsior Springs's most notable landmarks. By 1880, it had become one of America's largest lumber yards with operations throughout eastern Missouri and western Illinois including Springfield, Illinois; Decatur, Illinois; Niles, Michigan; West Point Junction (now Dickinson), Pennsylvania; Clinton Township (Clinton County), Iowa; Crystal City (Logan County), Texas; and many other locations around the country. In 1902 local resident Carrie Chapman Allen donated land to build what would become Washington High School east of town on Highway 64 near Interstate 40 towards Kansas City proper - this would eventually become high school for much of central Missouri including Excelsior Springs itself! After years of fundraising efforts by Mrs. Chapman Allen her gift became reality - now all students from Washington High School attend either Central Platte Community College or Truman State University depending on their needs! This led to further development both within town limits as well as neighbouring rural townships/cities like Springdale and Lebanon which started experiencing rapid growth during this time period too! During World War II almost every home within 5 miles radius served military purposes due to wartime rationing which meant that nearly everyone within these boundaries came under military jurisdiction! This included not just residents living inside city limits but also people travelling outside city limits who were subject to inspection by army officers at all times! Many citizens took up arms against fascism along with their friends and neighbours helping provide support through acts such as True Grit - one such act resulting in an arrest warrant being issued against then Mayor Walter Peckman! Overall though some pretty intense times were experienced here with people coming together willing to do whatever it takes just so their fellow citizens could survive... even if that meant going above & beyond!! Today Excelsior Springs remains vibrant with its wide variety of businesses & cultural attractions offering something for everyone - making it an excellent place to call home whether you're looking for tranquility or excitement!.
