Excelsior Springs is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 54,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Excelsior Springs began as a small village on the banks of the Illinois River in 1871 and grew to become one of the most significant cities in south-central Missouri by the turn of the 21st century. The first settler in Excelsior Springs was John Witherspoon who arrived in 1851 from Scotland. He founded a store and post office at what is now known as Witherspoon Square and built a home which still stands today on North Avenue between Seventh and Eighth Streets (now Wright Boulevard). By 1860, there were six families living in Excelsior Springs with 45 businesses active in 1860; this number had grown to 101 businesses by 1870 when currency exchange started up again after being closed during the American Civil War because of supplies shortages caused by war efforts. From its founding until 1917, when it merged with nearby Florissant to form Florissant-Excelsior Springs, Excelsior Springs was under control of three different mayors: Daniel Haggerty (1877-83), James Dickey (1903-09), and Rufus Ames (1911-17). In 1917, Mayor Harry Jaffe merged both villages into one municipality which would remain unchanged until it became an independent city within St. Louis County on December 15th, 2007 when all three villages left for good without giving any notice or transition period to their citizens or businesses; this move created much animosity between residents who had been unified for so many years and those who would eventually have their city divided again only four years later when they reestablished themselves as separate but adjacent municipalities once more! Excelsior Springs is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. The first residents of Excelsior Springs were white settlers who arrived in 1836. They named their community after Excelsior Township in Allegany County, Michigan. The town was platted in 1841 by citizens of that township and remained so until it merged with neighboring town of Ocala to form the city of Excelsior Springs on January 1, 1907. Excelsior Springs became a village on November 3, 1914 when it amalgamated with two other villages- Ocala and Jacksonville- to form the City of Springfield which still functions as an independent municipality today. On September 15, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge signed legislation creating the St. Francois County Fairgrounds Commission which would manage and operate the fairgrounds for all three municipalities combined. The Fair Grounds Commission is still operational today as part of the city government. In late 2007 or early 2008 there were reports that a group known as "The Friends of Excelsior Springs" was planning to tear down what was left of several downtown buildings including architecture from the turnofthecentury and replace them with new structures designed by architect John Loyd Wright III who had been commissioned to design a municipally funded civic center for Springfield called "The New Dome". This project never materialized but some demolition took place anyway without further notice or explanation from either side as far as I could tell
