Excelsior Springs is a small town in Greene County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Cheickney Metropolitan Statistical Area. Excelsior Springs is known for itsCHI (CHRISTMAS) party and carnival which take place annually in early December. Excelsior Springs started as a post office called Excelsior on November 5, 1868, with a population of three. On October 8, 1886, it was renamed to Excelsior Springs after the nearby Excelsior Lake. The first postmaster was J.C. Mahoney The first school in what is now Excelsior Springs was built in 1872 by Hosea Griggs and John Fenton with funds provided by local investors including James Aiken and Wm Thatcher II. Residents of the village voted to build their own school when they were asked to do so at a meeting on December 6th of that year; however it did not open until 1874 due to lack of space at the original location on Depot Street across from the old train depot which had been converted into apartments since then! In 1907-08 there were ten schools in Greene County but only two operated for more than one year because of budget cuts made by Governor John Blythe during his administration; one being located in Carbondale (now Dixon) and another being located just east of Excelsior Springs at what is now Park Heights Elementary School! In 1912-13 there were thirteen schools operating but only six lasted beyond kindergarten because too much competition from other towns within driving distance! “It wasn’t until we got organized that we could get good grades on our reports back home so they would know how ‘on top’ we were! We didn’t want them thinking we weren’t serious about education because if they did they might send their kids here instead of sending theirs back home! The first post office opened in 1858, and the name of the town was chosen to honor General George Washington when he visited in that year. In 1861, Union troops burned down the Caldwell home while they were interning local citizens during the Civil War. The townspeople rebuilt quickly and soon began expanding their boundaries. They named a village after themselves, Excelsior Springs Village, in 1870. The population of Excelsior Springs grew slowly until World War II when it exploded due toair- Raids on Missouri cities such as Kansas City and Springfield by Japanese forces. With so many people moving to new places during wartime, almost everyone who lived in Excelsior Springs had their own social club or group that helped manage life at war's end. In 1945, an air raid destroyed most of the original homes in the village center but did not damage any of the churches or businesses. The community continued to grow as people from all over came to rebuild what remained of their lives following World War II. By 1951, there were over 150 residents living in Excelsior Springs Village with its own library and high school called Central High School for Boys & Girls (now known as Middle Tennessee State University). During this time period there was also significant growth within the Kansascity area with nearby Stroudsburg becoming more populous than Excelsior Springs ever could have imagined possible given its small size relative to major metropolitan areas at that time. This growth led eventually to centralization of both villages’ resources which ultimately resulted in greater services available to residents without having to leave their communities entirely. All things considered though, it is fair to say that nowhere did larger numbers move away from their smaller roots quite like they did from Excelsior Springs where they continue today as one cohesive community with a rich history dating back more than 160 years!
Excelsior Springs was founded in 1868 by the Missouri Central Railroad. The town became a post office in 1879, and an agricultural center in the early 20th century. In 1925, Excelsior Springs was annexed by St. Louis.
