Expansion on Excelsior Springs began in 1836 when the Missouri River was canalized from its original course to connect Iowa and Illinois. The town of Excelsior Springs was platted in 1839, and soon became a thriving community with a population of about 100 people. In 1851 the Kansas Pacific Railroad arrived in town, making it easier for goods to be transported between Iowa and Missouri. As trade increased, so did the number of residents in Excelsior Springs. In 1865 the Union Bridge was built over the Missouri River, connecting Excelsior Springs with Kansas City. This marked an important milestone for the town as it became part of the larger cityscape of Kansas City. Although greatly influenced by its surroundings, Excelsior Springs retained some elements of its rural roots until well into the 20th century. Today, Excelsior Springs is an attractive community with a rich history that offers plenty of opportunities for cultural experiences and education.
