Excelsior Springs is part of the Springfield–Springfield, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the banks of the Missouri River. The land that would become Excelsior Springs was first settled by Germans in 1836. By 1847, most of the German immigrants had moved to Illinois and were no longer welcome in Clay County. A few families from Germany remained until 1858 when they all left for Kansas when that state joined the Union. In 1859, a group of farmers decided to make a new home near what is now Springfield because there were no other settlements near them on the riverbank. They named their new community Excelsior Springs after one of their own number (John Espey) had been elected as sheriff of Clay County in 1848 and served several terms thereafter. The first post office was founded in 1865 and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1903. The name change may have been due to confusion with another small rural community called Excelsior which also began operations that year but ceased operations after just one year due to lack of customers or resources; however this could not be verified). A gristmill was built around 1870 and lumber production started soon afterwards; both mills remain operational today. In 1886 an engine shop and blacksmith shop were added to what would later become known as "The Village". The region surrounding Excelsior Springs was settled by French and Belgian colonists in the early 1800s. A post office called Excelsior Springs was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1856, the first school in what is now Excelsior Springs was built; it served students from neighboorhood children who gathered on the banks of the Vermilion River to study for school nearly every morning. A railroad reached Excelsior Springs by way of Overland Park on November 17, 1868; this made it possible for people to buy goods and services near their homes rather than carry them all the way to Kansas City or other nearby towns. By 1870, there were over fifty businesses located in downtown Excelsior Springs with a population of over 1,200 people. In 1865 photographer Julius Kapp took his famous photo of women washing clothes at a local laundry; this photo has been considered one of Kapp's most iconic images ever taken. The first post office opened here on November 12th 1865 under the name "Milford". It operated until 1976 when it changed its name to "Excelsior Springs". On October 6th 1886 Drury Cranch Hardware moved into its new location across from Pecos Lake which became home to many businesses between 1886-1996 including Sears Roebuck and Marshall Field & Co.. Windowsills are still common items found throughout these years as evidence that business continued even during difficult times! During World War II many residents worked at military posts around Missouri like Fort Leavenworth (now Topeka), Missoula and Springfield Armory (now Wichita) while others took part in various agricultural production efforts such as corn ethanol production or working on Victory gardens outside of town limits! Afterward many residents returned home with start up companies such as Microsoft which moved its operations out of Shawnee Mission before becoming an international company!
