Creve Coeur, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. The population was 2,095 at the 2010 census. It is part of both Pulaski County and Johnson County. The name Creve Coeur comes from French for "heart-shaped valley." The first European to visit CreveCoeur was a Jesuit priest, Father François Xavier de la Croix in 1685. He named the valley after hisbrothers, Olivier and Jean-Baptiste de Crevecoeur. The two brothers founded a trading post near present day CreveCoeur in 1768. From this post, they developed a deep interest in fur trading and became known as the "Fathers of Fur Trade." Fur traders arrived at CreveCoeur from as far away as St. Petersburg, Russia in 1804. By 1810, over 150 traders were operating at the post. In 1813, creole trader Pierre Laclède established a fur trade depot on the east bank of the Arkansas River just south of modern day Springfield Junction (Coomer). This depot allowed him to buy furs from Native Americans at lower prices than he could sell them back to the Native Americans himself through traditional trade routes across country. Laclède soon became one of Jouett's most important advisors during their fur trade operations and later helped found Springfield City Limits Commission which regulated land sales within city limits
