Creve Coeur, Missouri is a small town located in Jackson County, Missouri. The population was 1,722 at the 2010 census. Creve Coeur is known for its historical landmarks and for its annual "Bluegrass Festival". The first permanent settlement in what is now Creve Coeur was made in 1837 by wagon drivers who were traveling from Illinois to Kansas City. The first white settler was James Hickey. By 1840, there were ten families living in this area. In 1849, the United States government acquired the land that makes up present-day Jackson County from Native American tribes for $4 million. This purchase created an area of land that would be used as a military reservation for Native Americans and their descendants. The reservation formed the nucleus of what is today Creve Coeur. During the Civil War, General John Fetterman's Army of Arkansas occupied much of what is now Jackson County between 1861 and 1865. General Fetterman's army destroyed all but a single cabin on Indian Territory Road near present-day CreveCoeur (which he left unoccupied so as not to alarm the local Indians). In 1863, Colonel Nathaniel Lyon invaded Indian Territory and forced all the native people east of the Mississippi River into reservations or exile – including most of those living in present-day Creve Coeur. When Missouri statehood was granted to America on August 11th,1861, part of Indian Territory became part of new Missouri and was named Pettis County after Samuel Pettis who had served as governor during Missouri's earliest days as an American state. In 1868 when Pettis County merged with Newton County to form Hughes County, some residents elected to move away from Pettis County because they felt it had become too crowded with settlers from other counties seeking property within its borders (and because they did not like that Hughes county cheese came from Pettis'). On January 17th 1860 Archibald McGillivray set out across country on horseback wearing only his underwear to spread news about free elections being held throughout America; McGillivray never returned alive though he has been said to have crossed over into Mexico while doing so - probably due to rain cancellation problems caused by Mexican President Santa Anna withdrawing support for Lincoln following his victory at Battleship Texas).
