The Creve Coeur post office has been in operation since 1836. The settlement started as a series of log cabins on what is now County Road 9 north of Interstate 44 and east of County Road 519. The first settler was John Smedley, who arrived in 1836. Smedley's cabin became one of the first homes in Creve Coeur when it was platted on November 10, 1837 by commissioners from Webster County and St Francois County. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell took refuge near Creve Coeur with his army before retreating to Corinth, Mississippi due to Union forces advancing into his territory. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union forces at Fort Donelson in Tennessee and this led to an escalation of hostilities between the two armies which lasted until April 1865 when they finally came to an end (the Battle of Abu Ghraib). As a result of this battle, General Forrest lost many officers and men including Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase and Governor Andrew Johnson (both Republicans). During World War II Japanese military personnel were interned at CreveCoeur air base during World War II while their planes were being repaired or modified there; some aircraft were also used for target practice over nearby Independence Heights Elementary School during wartime testing phase by United States Army Air Forces pilots flying out from Elmira Municipal Airport northeast of Independence Heights across I-44 just south of present day US 63/US 64 junction (). This area has since been developed into Osage Hills neighborhood adjacent to airport property.). In 1949 after UPI’s “Top Ten Most Haunted Places in America” list was published (), several articles about hauntings appeared in local newspapers throughout the Midwest; one article mentioned that unidentified flying objects had been observed over school property near Will Rogers Memorial Airport (). After investigating further he found that no such objects had been found but rather USAF pilots practicing targets over school property using old airplanes!). Eventually all Japans remaining Internment Camps were closed following Japan's surrender
