By 1860, Creve Coeur had reached its peak as a thriving commercial center with a population of over 1,500. However, during the American Civil War Creve Coeur came under attack from Confederate forces who laid siege to the town for three months (1861-1862). Ultimately, however, Confederate General Robert E. Lee withdrew his forces from Creve Coeur without achieving any military objectives within the walls of the town. After the war ended, CreveCoeur resumed its prior status as a prosperous agricultural community with a population of around 1,000 today.
