Creve Coeur is a small town in the central part of Missouri, United States. The population was 1,350 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Raccoon River, east of St. Louis. The Creve Coeur Mill and Post Office were built in 1846 by James Hogg and his partners. The mill was destroyed by a fire in 1871 but was rebuilt and continued to be used until it burned down in 1951. The post office was opened on July 26, 1847, by Solomon Davenport Sr.. The first settler in Creve Coeur Township was John Clay from Kentucky. He arrived around 1800 and erected a log cabin on the bluffs overlooking the river which he named "Clay's Cabin". Claysville (later renamed Creve Coeur) grew up around Clay's cabin, becoming an important community for early settlers because of its strategic location near waterwayside trade routes and its close access to hunting grounds. In 1805, Lewis Cass married Deborah Ladd of Kentucky; they moved to what is now Webster County, Missouri where Lewis became an attorney and Deborah began teaching school. They had two children: Lewis Noland Cass (1806-1885) who married Rachel Todd Smith (1810-1892), also of Webster County;and James Homer Cass (1808-1892). In 1830s Deborah started teaching school at Bellefontaine Academy in Bellefontaine Springs before moving to Illinois where she taught for several years before returning home to start her own school at Wallaceburg Settlement near present day Kansas City. In 1840 Territorial Governor Nicholas Pettey appointed John Fenton as justice of peace for Platte County; Fenton served until January 8th, 1842 when he resigned due to ill health After being diagnosed with yellow fever he returned home to die three days later on January 10th at age 38 years old In 1865 Lucy Parsons married Isaac Taylor who lived next door to her father William Barnes during their time living at Big Creek outside Topeka KS
