Crestwood, Missouri is a town located in the Ozarks of north-central Missouri. The population was 9,402 at the 2010 census. Crestwood is part of the Springfield, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Crestwood was made on the south side of what is now New Market Road in 1847 by two brothers, James and John Craddock. The Craddocks were farmers and had six children who all went to college. In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army passed through Crestwood on their way to battle at Pea Ridge in Arkansas. Many of the town's citizens rode with Sherman's army as it moved through the area. After Pea Ridge, many people from Crestwood came to work for Sherman's army and live in Springfield after the war ended. In 1872, a group of settlers led by John Pogue erected a log cabin on what is now Indianola Road near present day White Sands Lake. This initial settler community would grow into what is today Crestwood when others arrived over time including Drury (1880), Heaps (1888), Goodloe (1903), Wiltz (1907) and Parks (1920). During World War II, many local residents served in military units such as the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force Station at nearby White Sands Lake which was home to more than 1,000 airmen during World War II In 1965, Crestwood became an incorporated town when its residents ratified a referendum giving them this power. In 1975, Crestwood annexed part of neighboring Heaps Township where much larger homes were built including Oneonta Elementary School which still stands today across from Heaps' courthouse on Illinois Avenue NW A new high school opened in 2002 adjacent to Oneonta Middle School which closed its doors following the 2007-2008 school year due to budget cuts championed by then-Mayor Linda Hickson and later State Superintendent Danny Garrett . Since then there has been efforts to reopen Oneonta High School but no progress has been made According to 2000 census figures released by MO Department of Revenue: male inhabitants aged 25 or older are 50% more likely than females aged 25 or older not currently employed; black citizens are almost twice as likely as white citizens not currently employed; single Hispanic/Latino males are almost three times as likely as single non-Hispanic white males not currently employed; those earning less than $10 per hour are more than twice as likely as those earning more than $30 per hour not currently employed; rates for married women ages 15-44 years have increased since 1990 while rates for married men age 45 or older have decreased
