Crestwood is a small, rural town located in the eastern part of Missouri. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by I-435 to the north, US Route 506 to the east and south, and Rushmore Lake to the west. The community was founded in 1892 by settlers from Illinois. The Crestwood post office was established in 1893, and remained in operation until it closed in 1954. The first settler in Crestwood was John Alder who arrived on horseback from Illinois on October 8, 1892. Alder named his farm "Crestwood". In 1903, Charles Hogue settled near what is now Crestwood Village after purchasing 6 acres of land from John Alder. In 1916, Harry Sperry opened a general store and grocery business at what is now known as Sperry's Addition. The original crest woodsmithery which operated here for many years became extinct due to lack of customers during prohibition times In 1951, Charles Hogue donated 10 acres of his farmstead back to Crestwood village for use as a parkette with tennis courts and a playground. This donation made Crestwood one of only two communities within Missouri that received this type of donation during that time period In 2002, Crestwood residents voted 3-2 in favor of annexing neighboring Rushmore Lake into their community pursuant to an ordinance passed by the Town Council that year This annexation brought about increased traffic congestion around the town center because both villages are served by Interstate 435 Today most businesses within Crestwood are connected through electronic commerce or phone technology rather than physical streets
