Crestwood, Missouri was once a small town located in the far west corner of Missouri. The community was founded in 1819 by Captain Daniel Boone and his family. It grew rapidly due to its location and mineral resources. In 1854, the population of Crestwood reached 1,500 people. By 1907, it had shrunk to fewer than 100 people. But despite its lowpopulation density, Crestwood achieved significant success as an optometrist and optical manufacturer. The firstOptical Instrument Manufacturing Company opened up shop in Crestwood in 1906. This company manufactured spectacle lenses and telescopes for personal use and scientific research. After World War I,optical manufacturers shifted their production to wartime nations such as Germany and Japan because of scarcity of materials domestically. However, postwar shortages led to continued decline in optical sales throughout the 1930s until roughly 1945 when production increased again thanks to new technologies such as digital image processing. In the 1970s and 1980s, Opti-Tech Inc., a company that specialized in electronic microscopes (Emmitrons), became one of Crestwood's leading businesses. The company produced state-of-the-art microscopes which allowed scientists and physicians to study viruses at unprecedented levels with impunity during the early 21st century pandemic known as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). In 1957, Crestwood merged with neighboring towns of Springfield and Independence to form the city of Springfield-Jefferson County. In 2002, Crestwood again became an independent municipality when it split from Springfield-Jefferson County and incorporated as Crestwood Municipal Borough. As of the 2010 census there were 4,711 people living in Crestwood Township alone and 2,827 residents living in Springfield-Jefferson County combined (a total population of 11,989). The history of Crestwood can be traced back to 1836 when Captain John Dickey came across what he thought was an uninhabited Indian village on the west bank of the Arkansas River. From here he began to build a small community which would eventually become known as Crestwood.
