The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The town was named for General James Wilkinson Crestwood, a commander in the Union army during the American Civil War. Crestwood was platted in 1879 by Elisha Bogue and others under the name "Ozark". It became part of Scott County when it was organized on March 15, 1896. The Crestwood post office closed on December 6, 1975; its last letter arrived on December 12. The current post office is located at 9600 W Memphis Road in Springfield. Despite this adversity, however, crestwood continued to grow during World War II (1939-1945). This growth caused much controversy among residents because of their concerns about possible destruction of their homes by wartime bombardments. Despite these challenges, crestwood continue to experience significant growth throughout its history; by 2000 it had reached nearly 100 thousand residents!
Crestwood was founded in 1838 and named for the crest of a white oak tree that was found near the town. The first settler in Crestwood was Samuel H. Crandall, who built a cabin on the bank of the White River. In 1839, he married Lydia Gaines and they started a farm around what is now Crestwood Elementary School. The Crandalls were also responsible for building the first Methodist Church in Crestwood. In 1840, they had four children and decided to move to their current location on South County Road after hearing about land grants available for sale in that area. They bought 4 acres of land and built their first home, which still stands today. By 1850, there were over 30 people living in Crestwood with some businesses such as a general store and blacksmithshop opening up during that time. Growth continued through the 1800s with many new homes being erected along County Road including one located at present day intersections of County Roads 6 & 17 (now part of I-435). A post office was established at Crestwood in 1855 and by 1860, there were over 50 residents within town limits! During the American Civil War (1861-1865), most of Crestwood sided with Confederate States of America (CSSA) due to political reasons. However, many residents remained supportive of Union forces until 1865 when Union troops invaded Missouri Governor David Rose's home state looking for soldiers to fight against General Ulysses S. Grant's army during the American Civil War era called "The Great Rebellion." Many local men volunteered or were drafted into CSSA but no civilians were killed as a result of this invasion; however one man from Crestwood did lose his life as a result from enemy gunfire while serving in Union Army units subsequent to surrendering at Springfield on April 9th 1865 known as "The Day Of Shame" for all aspects associated with it including civilian fatalities throughout THE STATE OF MISSOURI!
