The first settlement in Crestwood was made around 1825 by three brothers named John, Isaac and Andrew Hill. Crestwood was laid out as a township on November 1, 1837 by order of the General Assembly. Crestwood experienced heavy flooding in October 1886 which destroyed many homes and caused extensive damage to businesses and infrastructure. The community rebuilt quickly with help from donations from individuals and organizations. In 1907 a new high school was built in Crestwood which served the town until it closed in 1995 due to budget cuts. Crestwood, Missouri is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town started as a post office on April 15, 1855, and was named after Crestwood Farm in New York State. The first settlers were James Wray and his family. In 1860 John Shaw built a log cabin near the present day site of Crestwood. In 1865 Jno Hargrave settled there with his family and began to grow corn on his farmstead which he named "Hargrave's Corner". A school was founded in 1870 by Mrs. Hargrave and operated for one year before being closed due to lack of funds. A church was also founded in 1870 by Mr. Hargrave but it only served as a meeting place until 1875 when it was moved to its current location north of town. In 1881 Manuel Martinez purchased some land east of Crestwood from Capt William Fulton for $2,500 cash and began to build a house known as Martinez House which still stands today across from the intersection of US-50 and I-435 known locally as "Martinez's Hill". He also started growing grapes which he exported to Europe (and later North America) for wine production). By 1888 many residents had moved into new homes built around what is now Main Street while others continued to live off their farms through subsistence agriculture including raising livestock, harvesting crops, making candles or soap etc.. On July 4th 1890 James Pritchard took delivery of two steamboats bound for St Louis bearing load of flournuts destined for Chicago via Mobile Bayou where they would be sold alongside other goods arriving on that day at river mouth. Coal mining commenced nearby in 1889 but this activity did not significantly impact the growth or development of Crestwood until after World War II when aluminum became an important commodity crop with steel mills opening up throughout the area Fortune Mining Company purchased much of the old Holt mine property including Holt Chapel which lies just east of town limits today within sight both south side creek banks bordering upon downtown Crestwood & west side creek bank bordering upon Ransom Creek adjacent Camp Hicks operation
Crestwood is a census-designated place in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 511 at the 2000 census.
