A post office called Crestwood was established in 1872, and remained in operation until 1959. The community name derives from two nearby hills: Crestwood Hill and Crestwood Ridge. The first store in Crestwood was built by John Dickey in 1875. By 1893, there were five stores and one hotel in Crestwood. In 1907, the depot closed due to lack of business; it reopened as an agricultural cooperative store on Main Street a few years later. In 1923, the Missouri River valley formed along the border of present-day County Road K (now US Route 31) and Township Rd 99 west of Crestwood; this opened up new land for development within what are nowown limits of Crestwood since much of that region had been farmland since before that time. One result was that most buildings erected within what are nowown limits date back to this time period or later; these include the original courthouse which still stands today on Main Street near where it once served as a bank branch and post office (1872-1957). The early days of retail development were not without controversy as some residents objected to outlanders coming into their community while others embraced the change because they saw it as opening up new opportunities for their businesses which would then provide jobs for locals during difficult times such as World War II when many farms were lost due to combat radiation exposure or loss of livestock due to war shortages; however some grocery stores did close down during those times leading to increased competition from larger chains who could afford better marketing/ltd acuity than smaller independents who often couldn't keep up with changing customer trends or had less overhead costs). In 1957, when Interstate 55 bypassed eastern portions of St Louis County including Crestwood,[7] most people withdrew support for Granger's Drug Store - one reason being its high prices charged by other independent pharmacies which had become dominant after I-55 came through town[8]. However, over time some people have come back around[9], perhaps spurred on by nostalgia towards more "normal" days before things changed so dramatically overnight? Crestwood is a small town located in Union County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Joplin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Crestwood was Isaiah Hatch who arrived in 1836. He and his family were the first to live on the east side of town. Some other early settlers were Elijah Bicknell, James Harker and Daniel Asbury. In 1839, Isaac Hatch's son Amos died young at age 22 while serving in the Mexican–American War as a Private in Company K 4th Infantry Regiment of the Missouri Volunteer Militia under Colonel John Pemberton. This loss deepened Amos' pain which he expressed during his illness when he said "My boyhood dream has become a reality." A post office called Crestwood was established in 1838, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1896. In 1865, when Union County was created from parts of two previous counties, Crestwood became part of Union County. The population grew rapidly after that date due to waves of immigration from Germany and other countries during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Many Germans founded businesses here such as beer brewers, flour milliners and cheese makers; many also erected frame houses for themselves or their families which remain standing today. During Reconstruction (1867-1912), many African Americans worked as mechanics or laborers on farms near by or began their own businesses including those owned by Wm Epps who built a grocery store on Main Street near present day Interstate 65 just south of town limits in 1887; Lester Banks who operates what is now known as Bob’s Barber Shop on College Avenue; white men also opened restaurants such as The Diner across from Present Day Physical Education Middle School before World War II destroyed most all these businesses except for oneowned by Harry “Hap” Arnold which still stands today across from I-65 next to US 61/I-270 exit 12B
Crestwood was founded in 1838 by Gideon Forrest, a pioneer settler. The town grew rapidly due to the influx of settlers and its location on the banks of the Missouri River. Crestwood became a important transportation hub for the region and prospered as a flour mill and cattle ranching center. The population declined during World War II, but has since recovered modestly.
