Crestwood is a town in Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crestwood was founded in 1834 by pioneers John and Nancy Franks. The town was named for the Crested Butte mountain range in neighboring Union County. The first post office in Crestwood was established on October 17, 1835, by John Franks and James Waddell. The first store in Crestwood was built by George Hanks on a lot which he donated to the town. In 1836, the first church was organized in Crestwood with three members of the Franks family as trustees. In 1840, another church also formed with three members of the Franks family as trustees; this church later became known as First Presbyterian Church of Crestwood. In 1870-71, Reverend Amos Sibley visited Crestwood and pronounced it "the most improved place he had ever seen." He recommended that local settlers build a school building to serve as the town's only public school and provide education for children from poor families who could not afford other forms of schooling. A schoolhouse originally erected at what is now 4th Street and Main Avenue served as our first educational institution until 1915 when a new brick structure replaced it. A cotton gin started operations at what is now 3rd Street and Elm Street near what is now Bellefontaine Elementary School during early 1800s; this facility continues to produce raw cotton for local farmers today until current times along with numerous other industrial activities taking place within easy proximity including an auto parts/repair shop opened in 1984 adjacent to Bellefontaine Elementary School currently housing several hundred automobiles!!
