Crestwood is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1848 by Elijah Crestwood and his wife Rebecca. Crestwood is named after Fort Scott, Kansas, which Crestwood served as the regional seat for many years. During the American Civil War, Fort Scott was used as a Union military base and for munitions storage. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all soldiers of the Army of Northern Virginia to leaveFort Scott without distinction between Union and Confederate forces. After the war, most of Fort Scott's buildings were demolished to make way for new development including Crestwood which sat on part of the former fortifications until it was bought by developer Edward Wirth in 1922. A post office called Crestwood was established in 1848; it changed its name to Ripley in 1895 due to postal annexations within Clay County. Ripley became an incorporated municipality on November 3, 1907; it adopted a charter on March 30, 1912). Its growth has been based largely on agriculture with sawmills and other mills providing jobs during World War II and afterward; however, some industrial activity has also occurred over time such as Rex-Allis Engine Company manufacturing agricultural tractors from 1948-2009 The current mayor is Darin Strobel (D). Crestwood, Missouri was born on December 10, 1839 in the town of Crestwood, Livingston County, Missouri. The present day town of Crestwood was organized on February 20, 1856 by a group of settlers who had migrated from neighboring towns in Indiana. The early residents were farmers and their families who built log cabins and raised livestock. By 1860, the population had increased to about 50 people. On January 1, 1861 the first tornado touched down in Crestwood when it struck a farmstead just east of the community. After touching down several times throughout the night and morning, it caused extensive damage to barns and fences as well as some homes. Each time the tornado passed through a different part of town it created fear among residents because there seemed to be no end to its destructive power. It is said that one man destroyed seven barns and two houses before he was killed by his own storm cellar that collapsed during the tornado. The first post office in Crestwood was established on July 8th, 1861. That same year saw the arrival of another wave of immigrants - this time Germans - who started farming in what is now Crestwood Township. Over time these newcomers also introduced new industries such as lumbering and agriculture into Crestwood; both endeavors proved successful but required more land than could be acquired initially due to natural resources such as coal deposits around nearby Joplin and other cities which led to widespread deforestation across central Missouri during this period. In 1865 an act Congress passed known as The Kansas-Nebraska Bill which granted Nebraska territories including adjoining parts of Illinois including Cumberland County (now eastern Jefferson County) eastward over Topeka River until it reached Kansas’ border with Mexico; thenceforth all territory within Nebraska included within Kansas borders subject only to popular vote for admission into that state! This event marked an era change for central Missouri where previously there had been little permanentpopulation growth outside Johnson City while most development took place along river valleys or along routes connected thereto like Railroad Avenue which today still features large sections mid-20th century housing developments called Maple Hills/Hillsborough Estates etc.?
