Crestwood, Missouri is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri. The population was 1,083 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1872 by J.D. Morris and others as a result of the railroad's construction through the area. The first store opened in 1875 and the first school was built in 1876. Crestwood has had a post office since 1881. In 1924, Crestwood became an incorporated municipality with a population of 330 people. In 1951, it merged with nearby unincorporated communities Park Hills and Ridgecrest to form what is now known as Crestwood-Park Hills-Ridgecrest Municipality. The town has many businesses including two banks and three medical clinics which are all located on Main Street near the high school and park district playgrounds. Crestwood is a small town located in the Ozarks of east-central Missouri. It was founded in 1836 by John and Martha Crestwood, who named it for their ancestral home, Crest Wood on the border of Kentucky and Tennessee. The Crestwoods were among the earliest settlers in this area, moving from Greencastle, Indiana in 1812. They built a log cabin near what is now Crestwood on the banks of the Missouri River. In 1840, they erected a larger cabin on a rise overlooking the river. The crestwornings prospered as farmers and merchants; their store became one of eastern Missouri's most important businesses. By 1860, they had acquired additional land nearby and built another large cabin—this time incorporating as a village. By 1870, Crestwood had become an incorporated community with a population of about 100 people. During its early years, Crestwood served as an important transportation center for eastern Missouri; its location made it convenient to reach many key markets including Lexington (16 miles away), Columbia (25 miles away), and Jefferson City (30 miles away). Its post office operated from 1836 until 1861; during that time it was one of only two post offices in southeastern Missouri still in operation today. Additionally, through its agricultural pursuits and local trade publications such as "The Herald" and "The Democrat", Crestwood developed into one of eastern Missouri's leading towns along with Rolla and Hannibal

Crestwood grew quickly, becoming a small town of about 200 people by 1860. In the 1880s, it became an agricultural center with many farmers practicing grafting and crossbreeding; in addition, Crestwood had a large livestock market. In the 1920s, Crestwood experienced rapid population growth due to World War I and the stock market crash that followed. The town began to lose its economic stability after World War II as farming declined and manufacturing took over; however, the population has continued to grow since then, reaching 3,000 people by 1990. Today, Crestwood is an important cultural center in southeastern Missouri with a wide range of businesses and cultural organizations located within its boundaries.
