The first settlers in Crestwood were farmers who began to arrive here in the early 1800s. By 1881, Crestwood had a post office and a few stores. In 1898, an oil well was drilled in Phelps County and some people started to bring production back to Crestwood from nearby towns such as Independence and Fenton. In 1925, Crestwood had its first schoolhouse and by 1928 it also had a church and two businesses. By 1930, there were five schools in Crestwood with over 100 students each; four high schools (grades 9 through 12) and one middle school (grades 5-8). In 1963, after World War II ended, new factories started up all around the area so much that the town's only job was to keep track of where they were located on local maps! However, by 1970-71 Crestwood's population had decreased by 95% due to booming industry across the state which eliminated jobs for many people living hereabouts. It wasn't until 2002 when a group of citizens gathered together to start talks about reviving what little development there still existed in town - most notably an art museum scheduled for opening that year called "The Arts at Heart". With help from various private donors throughout 2003-2004 including Kiwanis Club International America President Tom Wingate - who donated $5 million towards its construction - plans finally got underway for what would become known as "CrestWOOD Center forthe Arts". As of 2006 however nothing has actually happened with regards to this ambitious project other than hope – something that may very well come true if ever given another go-around since it seems like things have just been frozen at this point!
