Crestwood is a small town in Ralls County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson City–Joplin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Crestwood was John Bird in 1828. A post office was established here on January 15, 1829, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on February 14, 1865. The present town site was platted in 1868 by commissioners George Harkins and James Witherspoon. The first school in Crestwood was built on the corner of Elm and Washington Streets in 1892-93. In 1906, the first high school opened; it merged with Central High School to form Central High School District #2 in 1959-60. In 1954, Crestwood became a city when it merged with Joplin under the terms of an agreement between Mayor Harry Siegel and General Manager Robert Conebarger. At its peak as a city, Crestwood had a population of over 25,000 people; however this number decreased rapidly after the merger due to increased competition from Joplin's larger population size and better transportation options available to residents outside of downtown Joplin.
