Crestwood is a small town located in Boone County, Missouri. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Greene- Jackson, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Crestwood were the Potts and their children who arrived from Kentucky about 1819. They developed a plantation industry which produced corn and other crops as well as cloth for sale to local farmers. In 1864, another family, the McConnells, moved from Indiana and acquired land east of Crestwood on which they built a large country home known as "Mornin' Meadows". In 1876 John Sperry opened a bakery in Crestwood which became one of the most successful businesses in the area. After his death in 1915 his son continued the business until it closed its doors in 1984. In that year also came about perhaps Crestwood's most significant event when Stonington High School was established by two schools friends, Alonzo Cates and Lester Bivins. At that time Crestwood had only one school with no hangar or playground available so students took to using nearby churches for temporary facilities until such time as an permanent school could be built. The first permanent settler in Crestwood was John Fenton, who arrived from Kentucky with his family in 1849. By 1860, there were twelve families living in Crestwood; five of these families were married into other local families and six were self-sufficient farmers. In 1907, Crestwood became a town under the terms of an act passed by the Kansas Legislature which authorized representative government for towns within ten miles ofKansas City. At that time, Kansas City had a population of over 10,000 people and Crestwood had only 581 residents. Under town government, it began to develop some native aspects to its culture which would later be absorbed into neighboring communities such as Overland Park and Olathe. In 1960, when Kansas repealed its statehood statute and become an Oklahoma Territory, Crestwood lost all municipal rights and became part of Olathe proper; however, it continued to be governed by officials from Olathe until 1978 when local officials took control again due to changes at the state level regarding municipalities withinOklahoma Territory. Today, Crestwood is one of four remaining small towns left within Oklahoma after the territory was admitted into the United States as part of President George H.W._ Bush’s “New Mexico Purchase” on November 16th december 1988; this acquisition made Oklahoma more diverse linguistically and numerically than any other territorial region comprising both Colorado (the former Mexican territory) and New Mexico (the former Mexican territory). In addition to its rich cultural heritage dating back more than two centuries – including remnants of pioneer society – there are also many thriving businesses present today that reflect both modern day technology as well as traditional values associated with smalltown life: grocery stores (anchored by Kroger), banks (national OKBMs), churches/mosques (including Holy Cross Catholic Church), lakeside restaurants/bars/laundromats etc.; all while still maintaining hometown feel!
Crestwood was founded by James and Nancy Crestwood in 1837. It was named for the crest of a horse that belonged to John Pritzker, one of Crestwood's early settlers. The first post office in Crestwood was established in 1841. In 1861, the town became a county seat and remained so until it was abolished in 1911.
