The community is located in Grant County and is part of the Springfield, MO–Jefferson City, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Crestwood area was first settled by German immigrants in 1836. By 1860, it had a population of about 350 people. In 1871, Crestwood became an agricultural center with farms and orchards that produced corn, cotton, hay, and other crops. The post office was established in 1872. In 1906, the U.S. government acquired title to all of the land east of US 160 along the Mississippi River which included much of Crestwood Township including its current boundaries. On December 1st 1906 (just over one hundred years after Crestwood's founding), Crestwood incorporated as a village under the name "Crestwood". In 1965–1966 (the last time it changed hands), Crestwood voters approved a $2 million bond issue for public education purposes which funded several new schools within the village limits as well as new engineering and road construction projects throughout Grant County In 2002–2003 (the final year it change hands), Crestwood voters passed an ordinance authorizing annexation by neighboring townships on behalf of local government officials who felt that their own township could not provide services adequately to residents within their own borders On November 3rd 2006 (eleven days before Election Day), Crestwood — again under pressure from neighboring townships—voted to annex by referendum both sides of US 160 into which all but two homes within its boundaries were annexed creating what is now known as "Crestwoods", "Grant Park" and "Albany". It should be noted that this vote did not take place without input from local leaders such as Mayor Dick Hickey who traveled to Washington D.C., where annexations were being discussed at that time in order to push for approval;[1] however most residents still consider themselves part-of-Springfield despite living mostly outside-of-town limits since annexation occurred
