Garfield moved to Crestwood and built a house on what is now Elm Street. Garland became president of America in 1880 and made Crestwood his home during his presidency. The post office at Crestwood was established in 1853, and named for General William Troup (1822-1885), who fought with General Winfield Scott at Buena Vista Creek and others actions during the Mexican–American War. Garland's widow Anna Meche had a post office named after her late husband until it closed in 1903 due to low postage rates caused by the Panic of 1893. In 1865, Mrs. Garland donated land on which Wabash College now stands to become a public school district kindergarten through grade 12 institution known as "The Alma Mater". The name was changed to "Crestwood Public School District" in 1969 when Wabash College vacated its campus on East Elm Street adjacent to the original school site (now Old Main) and transferred its students into schools within our new district boundaries north of I-435/Highway 571 east of town limits
