Columbia, Missouri is a small town in southern Missouri. The population was 1,574 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Columbia, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Columbia starts with Jean Baptiste Chouteau who settled in what is now Columbia in 1811. He founded a trading post and named it Chouteauville after himself. In 1821, he married Marie-Hélène de Laclos, who was also from Quebec. They set up a farm south of town and began to grow crops and raise livestock. In 1830, Jean Baptiste Chouteau died suddenly and left his estate to his wife and children. His widow continued to run the farm until her death in 1865; then the farm passed through several families before being purchased by John Dorney in 1892. Dorney developed it into an agricultural center known for its corn fields, eggs, dairy products, and poultry production. The townspeople built their first school in 1896; it was replaced by a more recent building in 2002. Columbia has experienced various changes over its history including: a rapid growth during the early 21st century due to economic development associated with nearby St Joseph County; the displacement of most of the older residents during the 2007-2009 Great Recession as jobs became available outside of town; and finally an influx of people from surrounding counties following incorporation into St Joseph County in 2010

Columbia, Missouri is a small community in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town started as a small farming village in 1839 on the east side of Columbia River and grew to become a major mercantile center in the region during the 19th century. Today, Columbia still retains much of its early history including brick buildings from the 1830s and 1840s and downtown streets with unique architecture that has been preserved throughout time. Columbia was founded by fur trappers who traveled upriver to trade with Indian tribes along theMissouri River. When they came ashore on Long Island in 1763 they named their new settlement after Christopher Columbus, an Englishman who had discovered America east of Spain while exploring for trade routes to Asia-Pacific ports- thus beginning American exploration westward! The first permanent settler in what would later be Columbia was James Cook who arrived with his party of men and animals in 1805 via boat from Great Britain.. He built Fort De Grave which served as trading post until 1827 when it burned down! From this point forward Columbia became known as ColumBIa because most residents either lived there or worked nearby at various businesses such as flour mills, banks and warehouses which dotted Main Street during those early years! During World War II many local families helped contribute materials and manpower to support military activities throughout central Missouri including supplying munitions plants near Rolla and Kansas City; manufacturing munitions for Army Air Forces bombers based out of RAF Bentwaters; construction of airfields at Shawano Junction; lumber production at Galesburg; agricultural production around Ironton (now Independence) MO; assistance to farmers living along Interstate 55 between Topeka and Joplin MO.; retailer support for local needs such as fuel storage capacity for buses drivers etc.; all while maintaining close relationships with friends back home! In recent years some touchstone memories have been restored or renovated properties such as parts of Main Street shuttered since 1958 due to lack of funding but Restored Columbia Museum continues operations providing informative exhibits about life within this historic town while also entertaining visitors through monthly performances by local artists
Columbia, Missouri was founded on the banks of the Kansas River in 1803 by James K. Polk. The town grew rapidly and soon reached its peak population of around 100 people in 1830. However, the Panic of 1837 caused a rapid loss of jobs and commerce, which led to Columbia's decline. In 1841, it was renamed for George Washington because of its location along the route that he traveled as a General during the Mexican-American War. The town again declined in popularity after World War II until it regained some prominence as an agricultural center in the early 21st century.
