The town was founded on April 15, 1831 by Methodist missionaries named James Sperling and George Wills as a missionary station in central Missouri known as Zion Station. In 1836, columbians formed an agricultural society to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) of land from Nicholas Sibley for $5 per acre ($20 per hectare). This land became Columbia's mainstay until after 1840 when it began to decline due to epidemics such as malaria which killed many people in that area. In 1860, when Missouri seceded from the United States, Columbia became part of Kansas Territory; however it reverted back to Missouri after only four years due to a lack of agreement between Kansas Territory and Arkansas Territory over sales taxes. By 1875 Columbia had become one of the most prosperous cities in America. In 1890s Columbians responded to pressure from nearby Chicago to expand their city into what would become its borderlands with Mexico City; this led to a surge in immigration that has shaped Columbia's demographics ever since.
