In 1887, a group of men in Columbia, Missouri were inspired to create a shooting range because they could not find any good places to shoot. The first shooting range in the town was built on what is now called the Old Courthouse square. The men used logs as targets and shot at them with cannons. The first shootings took place on October 25th. There were only twelve people in attendance and most of the shots went into the ground. Nine people died from gunshot wounds and one person was killed by a stray bullet that entered his car through an open window. The original shooting range was destroyed by fire in 1893 but it was rebuilt soon afterward by J.B. Ladds & Sons rifle company which became known as “Ladd’s Rifle Range” It continued to be used until 1907 when it was replaced by the present day Columbian Shooting Range located near the current courthouse square which opened in 1915 Columbia had its own gun show starting back in 1886 and eventually becoming very successful In 1911, due to lack of space at Columbian Shooting Range, an NRA convention decided to move their annual meeting from Saratoga Springs, New York to Nashville, Tennessee instead NRA members voted unanimously to build their own gun store there so that they could buy new guns more easily
