Columbia, Missouri is a town in Anoka County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Area and is located on the Stroudsburg River. The first settler in Columbia was George Washington Carver who came to the area in 1837 with his family. In 1851, David Denton founded what would become Columbia as a small community on the west side of the river near where it flows into Minnesota. By 1870, there were over 200 residents living in Columbia and it had a school and store. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location downstream from important railroads and its access to water resources. During World War I, Columbia served as an airfield for US Air Forces Northeast which used nearby Wright-Patterson AFB for bombing missions; this made it one of only two American cities that were bombed by Germany during World War I (the other being Detroit). After the war ended, much of what had been developed around Columbia was destroyed by fire; however, new development began in earnest following land purchases and construction projects led by Mayor John Ahern in the early 21st century. In recent years Columbia has seen increased interest from visitors due to its scenic views of downtown Minneapolis/St Paul and Stroudsburg River; as well as its excellent restaurants and nightlife scene. In 1836, a group of Missouri farmers, led by Major General James K. Polk, traveled to Columbia to purchase land from the Cherokee Nation. The largest and most important purchase was the 200-acre (81 ha) tract that became the city of Columbia. The new town was founded on September 16, 1836, by General Polk and his aides as part of an attempt to consolidate alluvial lands in Clay County into one place. The first settlers were primarily men from Kentucky and Tennessee who had been invited by Governor Claiborne Jackson to join him in trying to purchase land in what is now Clay County. By 1840, there were over 100 people living in Columbia. In 1845, a post office was established at Columbia with the name "Columbia." The town grew quickly due to its strategic location near several transportation routes and its easy access to Marketsburg for goods brought in by wagon train passengers. Beginning in the late 1800s, Columbia experienced significant growth as a cotton mill center. Factory jobs gave way during World War I to more agricultural production; however, after the war ended development slowed down again until the early 21st century when it resumed somewhat modestly because of increased competition from other cities in Missouri and Illinois. However recent visits have shown that some aspects of old industry are still extant such as an industrial park adjacent to downtown which houses four large turbines generating power for the city; and a number of small businesses located around streetscar stops along Main Street including a hair salon/beauty parlor/cafeteria/, convenience store/, movie theater/, grocery store/.
