Columbia, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of north-central Missouri. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Columbia was a French fur trader named Jacques Marquette in 1805. He explored the area and noted that it had richly textured soils and streams which he thought would make for great farmland. In 1820, United States Congress passed an act declaring Columbia a territorial territory of Jackson County, Missouri. The new county was named for General Andrew Johnson who had been President when the act passed. In 1825, Colonel James Kinsman established a trading post at Columbia on the south bank of the White River near present day Hannibal. This law enforcement outpost became known as "Kinsman's Point." The post served as a center for trade and transportation on the river until it was abandoned by settlers in 1851 due to increased competition from other settlements on the riverine plain east of Columbia. In 1840, General Thomas Wolcott founded what is now called Wolcottville along one side of White River opposite where Kinsman's Point once stood. Here he erected brick buildings which served as his headquarters and store until destroyed by fire in 1865.. In 1850, local farmers began growing corn which they raised on their porches and fields until it became available for export to Europe via wagonroads thereabouts… shortly before American independence from Great Britain set off this powderkeg overweening controversy: did our fathers really liberate these colonies from British tyranny? Columbia’s history dates back to about 1800! A few years later (1826), Abraham Lincoln visited this place while he was campaigning for election as President; we can be certain that he noticed our lovely cityscape emerging gradually outmoded among all those newer towns up yonder! Today you can still see evidence of early pioneer settler life here – many homes still stand with their original logs and mortar construction even though they have been through numerous fires! Columbiana has seen better days – but then again she always does!

Polk and his brother-in-law George Armstrong Custer as the first military post on the current site of Columbia City. The growth of Columbia led to construction of the Missouri River Bridge across it in 1868 which connected Columbia with Kansas City. The bridge was destroyed by a storm in 1903 but has been rebuilt numerous times since then. In 1916, Columbian College (now known as Washington University) was founded here; it remains one of the most prestigious private universities in America and one of its largest employers (employing over 3900 people). Columbia also experienced significant social and political upheaval during the late 19th century due to demographic changes within its borders as well as related economic conditions. These events include: -The American Civil War (1861–1865) - Masked functionaries from Springfield Armory sneaked into Columbia on horseback to provide arms for Union forces while they were besieging Fort Sumter; this led to several skirmishes between Confederate militiamen and local civilians that resulted in three fatalities; -The Great Depression - A period of rapid job loss throughout many industries following World War II caused widespread poverty and despair among Columbians; this contributed to violent protests against government austerity programs which rocked the town during the early 1960s; -The Stonewall Rebellion - On April 14, 1969, African Americans working at a local white grocery store won passage from management through peaceful protests after being refused service for years because their race made them "unacceptable" customers; this event began what is now known as "the history wars" around race in America and helped spark desegregation efforts throughout much of Jackson County
The first Europeans to visit Columbia, Missouri were the French in 1763. The town was founded by Captain Pierre Laclède in 1765 as a trading post on the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers. In 1803, Columbia was incorporated as a village. By 1836, it had become an independent city. Columbia became an agricultural center during the late 19th century and provided goods needed by farmers in St. Louis County and other parts of Missouri. The city also developed into a transportation hub for surrounding rural areas and became a major cultural center in the Midwest during the 20th century.
