In 1806, Alexander Hamilton moved into this building with his family and became one of the earliest citizens of Columbia when he bought property adjacent to General Wilkinson's house known as "Hamilton Place". When James Wilkinson died childless in 1820, he bequeathed allhis land westward including much extending along Randolph Road today known as "University Avenue." This large donation allowed lush farming valleys eastward from University Avenue through Proximity Park - including parts that are now part OfColumbia - back onto university land for future generations without having to clear any land or sell anything back again! For many years thereafter there was intermittent discussion about whether or not Columbias College should be located on University Ave., but no definitive answer could be found until 1960 when then Mayor Edwin Meese ordered Corpsman Drive extended northwest from University Ave.- forming finally Columbias current campus boundaries! By 1870 however much Eastside acreage had reverted back to farmland following heavy development by farmers surrounding UApark! Streets like Cornell Road were originally developed only yards away from farmsteads giving rise to names like Cornell Rd., Springhill Rd., Maple Grove Rd., etc...Today much newer streets like Washburn Dr./Uptown Blvd./Lenox Dr./Fort Harrison Pl/Normanwood Dr would still give rise to similar names if they were closer but would likely have less residential activity because most businesses nowadays are located closer to Interstate 44 or I-70 rather than far away on quiet streets like Washburn Dr./Uptown Blvd./LenoxDr/. Not surprisingly given these circumstances developing neighborhoods has become more difficult due than ever before with so many large businesses moving into nearby malls whereas rural families usedtoLive close by their homes providing basic services such as groceries shopping transportation
