Columbia, Missouri is a small town located in Clark County, Missouri. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. Columbia is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Bloomington, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Columbia were farmers who came from Illinois in 1836. They started a flour mill which continued operation until 1856. Columbia was platted on December 3, 1837 by Jesse Benton and James Hickey as a town site east of the mouth of Spring Creek on the Springfield-Springfield-Bloomington Railroad line between that city and Urbana (then Danville). The name "Columbia" was chosen because it resembled "the colossus known as Capitol Hill in Washington D.C." In 1840 Union troops burned Columbia while retreating from an engagement with Confederate forces near Cairo, Illinois. The burning caused $1 million worth of damage to buildings and crops within two miles of the town center including two homes of local landowner Jonathan Edwards who rebuilt his home after the fire department arrived to put out the flames. Aftermath of Battle for Corinth (December 4–5)1863 brought much destruction due to General Ulysses S Grant's order authorizingGeneral Alfred Bragg's army to burn any towns or villages that surrendered without Fight or flight—a policy later called "Burning Babylon". A battalion under Captain George Armstrong Custer destroyed all but four buildings at Resolute Crossing on November 27th during what became known as Native American Massacre although no soldier was ever prosecuted for this atrocity since most blame fell upon individual Indians rather than white men widely condemned for their actions at that time. A group led by Nathan Bedford Forrest burned Columbia following their victory over Confederate forces at First National Banknorthwest of town on April 12th 1865 before moving on to destroy other targets southward along I-55 entrance into Johnson County including Hannibal Junction just outside present day St Joseph City Limits on October 6th 1865 where they left behind an estimated 500 dead Indian captives plus untold numbers more wounded or captured because open warfare had resumed throughout much OF Missouri by then

Columbia was founded on July 4, 1839 by Daniel Boone and James K. Polk as Columbia City limits were surveyed for a new county seat of Pulaski County. It was named after the inland port of Columbia in South Carolina where the first transatlantic slave trade took place. The land comprising present-day Columbia was donated by John Denton to the state of Missouri in 1833 as part of an effort to gain more land for the development of St Louis and other cities in that state; it had been claimed by both Kansas and Illinois before that time. The town's location on high ground near what would become St Louis made it convenient for early settlers access to transportation and markets while also providing natural resources such as coal and water supplies necessary for Bellaire’s growth. The town rapidly grew during the 1830s and 1840s due largely to its strategic location -Bellaire could easily be reached from surrounding counties through roadsides or trails which led directly into downtown - as well as its own bustling commerce (the first post office opened in 1839). In 1846, due to financial troubles caused by over-production at his paper mill, Andrew Johnson appointed David Whitehead president of Bellaire Manufacturing Company – one of several operations he tried to rescue from failing during his presidency; Whitehead successfully reopened the mills with help from local entrepreneurs following their bankruptcy in 1865). With Bellaire back on track following Whitehead's stewardship, Columbia began experiencing rapid commercial expansion throughout the 1850s thanks in part to new railroads coming through town which connected it with larger markets throughout Missouri colonel John Smedley donated land adjacent to what is now US 61 just north of downtown for railroad storage yards; this increased traffic along US 61 which soon became known locally as "The High Road" due not only to its importance but also because much commercial traffic traveled down Highway 62 instead connecting Bellaire with other parts of southern Illinois via that route rather than going westward towards St Louis via Carrollton or Fentonville. In 1860 Jack Neely built a sawmill on Brush Creek located about one mile east of current day Main Street; this helped establish Columbia's primary industry until World War II when heavy industry replaced sawmilling as Columbians' primary economic focus. During portions of the 19th century Columbians experienced alternating periods of great prosperity followed by hard times; however overall they have managed relatively stable populations since 1800 despite occasional mass migration across state lines motivated by religious conversion opportunities or opportunity within specific geographical areas (e.g., Fort Smith Arkansas during Reconstruction). Consequently, aspects like community spirit and civic engagement remain strong today among Columbians who continue their residentially based social organizations including churches (largest concentration Greek Orthodox), professional sports teams (including baseball/softball leagues representing multiple communities), amateur artists (& musicians), theater groups & plays/, carnivals & festivals/fairs/. Additionally many residents commute into larger metropolitan areas nearby such as St Louis orKansas City for work or entertainment purposes; these commuting patterns are increasingly impacting how people use public transportation within their municipalities given recent investments made therein such As KCMO expands streetcar service into central business district making travel between neighborhoods easier & cheaper
