Columbia, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1836 and named for the Columbia River. The first post office in Columbia was established in 1837. The present town of Columbia was organized on July 1, 1872 when it Split off from Clarksville.[2] The population of Columbia increased rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location (just east of Springfield) as well as its access to railroad transportation and other resources. In 1923, an all-black school opened in Columbia[3] which helped promote integration into local society. During World War II, much of rural St. Francois County became involved in the war effort; some farms were requisitioned and used for military training purposes or housing civilians who had collaborated with Nazi Germany. As a result of this activity, many businesses closed and many people lost their jobs.[4] After the war ended there were few new refugees coming to America so most residents stayed within their original communities; however a small number did move away for various reasons (most notably lack of opportunity).[5] In 1984 an experimental reactor called Alpha Centauri went critical at Columbiumprojects Incorporated near Gillettstown but no one heard about it until after it blew up; this event led to public concern over nuclear power development in Missouri[6][7][8][9][10] However less than two years later construction began on another large nuclear plant just outside St Louis which would eventually be built and operated by GEICO[11]. This decision caused great upset among locals because they felt that their towns were being taken advantage of by big business while their neighbours got shafted – something that has continued to be a problem today despite efforts made to address it such as developing community centers[12].
