Columbia, Missouri is home to the oldest continuously operating gun sights in the United States. The 1851 Pawnee Rifle and Pistol Club’s rifle range was dedicated to shooting at targets for practice during a Louisiana cotton fields fair. The first hole in the range was located just outside of town on what is now called “Pine Street.” When Columbians began importing rifles from France in the 1830s, they brought with them their existing hunting guns and pistols. One French-born Columbian hunter, named Pierre-Jacques Chouteau, helped establish Columbia as a center of gunsmithing and firearm manufacturing in 1849. By 1860, Columbia had become one of the leading firearms manufacturers in America. The early 1800s were difficult times for Missouri gunmakers because Lieutenant Governor James Kapp issued an executive order prohibiting handguns within 10 miles of state capitols. This ban caused many small pistol makers to fold up shop and go out of business. However, one group of entrepreneurs decided to fight back against Kapp’s orders by starting a new company – the Pawnee Rifle and Pistol Club – which attempted to import firearms into Missouri without government permission (see also: “Pawnee Rifle Armory Opens In Columbia; Gunmaker Makes History Again!”). The club built its own rifle range using donated land east of town on Pine Street –today known as Pigeon Alley–and began practicing with imported weapons at this location until 1851 when it moved its operations indoors to what is now called “The Shooting Hall.” The club continued practicing outdoors until 1865 when it moved indoors again due to increasing threats from Confederate forces occupying Missouri (see also: "Columbia's Oldest Gun Sight Still Open; Ranges Here Haven't Been Used Since Confederates left"). After Confederate forces withdrew from Missouri in 1865, old guns that still carried rounds but lacked barrels were auctioned off off as munitions surplus (see also: "Gunsight history revisited - Columbia retains its old shotguns & rifles") . It wasn't until 1971 that new owners restored both indoor and outdoor ranges using original equipment and instruction from current staff members who have been working at The Shooting Hall since 1978! Today the club offers daily shoots for all levels of shooters including beginners through veterans aged 16 years or older who are accompanied by an adult volunteer instructor/driver/mechanic who provides technical support during sessions lasting two hours each day Monday through Friday 9am-1pm EST followed by 1 hour Saturday morning shoot before lunchtime; while overnight sessions are available every Wednesday night beginning at 6pm CST with no mandatory class time scheduled! All participants must be 21 years or older unless accompanied by an adult volunteer instructor/driver/mechanic who provides technical support during sessions lasting two hours each day Monday through Friday 9am-1pm EST followed by 1 hour Saturday morning shoot before lunchtime; while overnight sessions are available every Wednesday night beginning at 6pm CST with no mandatory class time scheduled!
