On April 12th, 1907, Columbian students founded Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity on campus at what is now called Third Street and Market Place (although it had been home to Phi Beta Kappa since 1865). In 1919 Sigma Chi was founded here and today continues its undergraduate brotherhood activity on campus with over 1,500 members strong. In 1938 Cherokee Nation member Winton Coleman donated land adjoining Columbian Stadium for use as a reservation for Native Americans living in that area; however this gift never came to fruition because no money could be raised to finance infrastructure projects needed for such an expansive undertaking. In 1961 – just two years after it moved from Old Main to its current location – Columbian voters adopted a resolution designating themselves "the City of Columbia" instead of simply "Columbia". Through hard work and determination by Mayor John Snedeker and his administration over more than three decades residents have made significant progress towards becoming one of America's most vibrant cities – welcoming people from all walks of life and housing them within walking or driving distance of everything they need and want within an easy commute to work or school

Columbia, Missouri is a small city located in the Ozarks of central Missouri. It was founded by General Robert E. Lee on November 17, 1837 as a post office called Fort Gibson. The city became an agricultural center and now has a population of over 15,000 people. Columbia was named after the states capital of Columbia, South Carolina, which had been burned by federal troops in 1814. The town site was chosen because it would be shielded from Indian raids and for its location at the confluence of two rivers. The first settlers in Columbia were farmers who arrived between 1837 and 1840. They built homes around a bend in the river where they could draw water from both sides to irrigate their crops. By 1850, however, the town had grown too large for these original settlers to live near by and they moved away to new settlements further upriver. A school was established in 1851 and soon afterwards there were also mills nearby that supplied clothiers with raw materials for their products. In 1863, when Confederate forces occupied Cairo, Illinois during the American Civil War, Columbia transiently sided with them until Union forces took control six months later. When Reconstruction ended following the Civil War (1865-1877), many African Americans relocated to Columbia due to racist policies implemented by former Confederate President Jefferson Davis et al.. This period is known as Reconstruction Memphis (). Many African Americans worked as sharecroppers or field hands while others began legal careers or studied law to help poor black residents get ahead after returning home from slavery. After Reconstruction ended, most African Americans left Columbia again due to restrictive housing ordinances and higher taxes enforced by white Mayor John Hines (1893-1911). However some black families managed to stay until 1958 when all public housing units were closed down due to lack of funding from state legislators attemptingTo integrate local schools into white districts
