Columbia, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The townsite was platted in 1855 by Captain John Safford and his brother-in-law Major James Hickey. They named it for Columbia, South Carolina, where they had been stationed as soldiers during the American Civil War. Columbia was incorporated as a town in 1868. It became an independent city on May 15, 1907 following passage of an act by the General Assembly of Missouri authorizing its secession from St. Francois County and becoming an entity within the new city of Kansas City. The primary industry in Columbia until after World War II was agriculture; however, this has changed since then as Columbia has become one of the leading communities in central Missouri for research and development in various industries such as information technology and health care services. In addition to its role as a center for research and development, Columbia also hosts several annual events that include arts festivals, agricultural fairs/fairs/festivals, rodeo tournaments/recreational events and football games (the only professional team currently playing in Columbia is the Chiefs). The first settler to arrive to what would become Columbia were two brothers—James Aiken and Hiram Aiken—who came overland from Kentucky on horseback on October 5th1855 while traveling with their father Isaac Aiken to purchase land west of present day Independence Mall near downtown Kansas City proper. Their wagon train filled up with goods destined for Independence Land Company traders downriver at Page’s Mill before continuing northwest along present day I-435 towards today’s Columbiana neighborhood east of I-435A just west of Union Station Plaza which served as headquarters for both companies until about 1892 when independence sales finally closed off all but about five acres specifically designated for missionary efforts among Native Americans living east of river due to rising costs associated with white settlement thereabouts plus increasing competition from settlers who leased or bought property east of river including what would later become Independence Mall itself . Columbia, Missouri is a town in Boone County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 as a part of the Kansas Territory. Columbia was named for the Columbia River. The first settlement in what is now Columbia was on the banks of the Arkansas River. A post office called "Auraria" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it closed in 1839. The town began to take form around 1840 when two man by the name of Harker and Cook built a wagon road from Independence to Corinth. They named their new community after King George Washington's capital city ofWashington D.C.. In 1845, three men by the name of Ford bought land east of Columbia on which they erected a log cabin and started farming. In 1850, they discovered oil shale near where Columbia now stands and soon became owners and operators of an oil well at Hughes Springs. In 1857, they donated land to build a school that would become Columbias first high school; it opened its doors for instruction on October 2nd,1867). The school buildings still stand today across from Interstate 270 just north of downtown Columbia! This early incarnation of Columbias educational landscape shaped much later when Columbias main avenue became known as "Washington Boulevard". For many years this artery ran through downtowns core artery while also providing easy access to most all types businesses including grocery stores etc... However due to heavy development withinColumbia over recent decades traffic along Washington Boulevard has greatly impacted qualityof life throughout centralColumbia making it difficult or even impossible for pedestrians/bike commuters/other outdoor enthusiasts (or simply people who want peace&quiet!)to access downtown without having significant adjacent mounted security presence
In 1820, the first white person to live in Columbia, Missouri was James Wilkinson. Wilkinson set up a small farm on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. He and his wife, Lucy, raised crops and built a house for themselves. In 1827, Wilkinson married Rachelle Hargrave. The couple had two children before Rachelle died in 1829. James Wilkinson adopted their son John as his own. The town of Columbia was founded by James Wilkinson in 1820 as a small farming community on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. In 1830, he erected a flour mill on what is now Main Street near South Water Street and named it Columbia after himself and his wife Rachelle Hargrave (1819-1829). The mill produced bread which became popular in Upper Ohio County during the 1830s because of its low cost and good flavor. Columbia remained an agricultural village until about 1840 when it began to become popular among traders for its natural resources such as coal and timber. By 1850, Columbia had developed into an important post office with storerooms, a schoolhouse and several dozen houses. It also boasted three churches - one Protestant (the First United Methodist Church), one Baptist (the First Baptist Church) and one Latin Catholic (New Hope Parish). By 1860, most of the original buildings were gone but some remain wellpreserved including the flour mill building which still stands today along Main Street between South Water Street and West State Street; local historian Tom Dooley has called this "one of downtown's most distinctive structures." A new courthouse was constructed at Eighth Court in 1862 following plans by General Ulysses S Grant who had visited Columbia that year while campaigning for reelection to President Abraham Lincoln. The courthouse served as both court house and jail until 1865 when it burned down due to termites eating away at its brick foundation.. A new courthouse was constructed at Ninth Court just north of where Union General Sterling Price surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9 1865 following Confederate General Robert E Lee's surrender from within Confederate lines less than five miles away! This structure served as both court house and jail until 1870 when it burned down again due to termites eating away at its brick foundation.. A new frame courthouse replaced all four previous buildings between 1893-1895 by Jeptha Litchfield Borden who designed an innovativeodaiquitecture characterized by large arches over Ionic columns that framed large windowsills surmounted by trained gables with elaborate cornices.. One significant feature Borden added were bracketed entablatures framing high arches above doorways completing what became known as "Borden Boulevard". Since then much keystone infrastructure like streetscape enhancements such as pedestrian crossings were added while many smaller structures have been preserved or destroyed including several cemeteries adjacent to downtown which are still used today for parking purposes only
