Columbia, Missouri is a small town located in northeastern Missouri. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. Columbia is part of the Springfield–St. Francois Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Columbia was James Pogue, who arrived in 1819. He named his land "Pogue's Prairie," after himself and his brother-in-law, John Pogue. In 1832, Alexander Hamilton purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land north of Columbia from Pogue for $1 million dollars. Hamilton established a sugar plantation there and built a mansion known as the Federal House which he used as his home and office until his death in 1849. The house still stands today and is open to the public as a museum. In 1861, when Missouri became an all-white state, Columbia refused to seat African Americans in its city council because it was thought that this would prejudice future black residents against the white community. Whites rioted throughout Confederate Missouri during the American Civil War; however, no violence occurred in Columbia specifically attributable to racism or discrimination against African Americans. As part of Reconstruction policy following the end of the Civil War, African Americans were gradually reintegrated into local society and institutions such as education and labor unions while white citizens generally enjoyed powerful positions within those same institutions through patronage systems or by taking advantage of anti-discrimination laws enacted by Congress. This process continued into the early years of post-war America with some progress but some institutional limitations due primarily to continuing racial tensions between whites and blacks across different levels of society There have been periodic efforts over time to overturn these limits through policies like affirmative action or desegregation but they have always been met with resistance from manyonents within local government circles who continue to see racial distinctions as necessary evils that should be preserved for economic reasons alone

Columbia is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri, on the banks of the Missouri River. The population was 24,592 at the 2010 census and 31,362 at the 2016 estimate. Columbia is one of two cities in St. Louis County; it is also home to George Washington University and Saint Louis University–Bentonville. The first settler in what would become Columbia was James K. Polk, who arrived in 1837 from Kentucky with his family. The town was named for him after he became President of the United States that year. In 1839, Missouri Territory was created from parts of Illinois and Iowa, including Columbia Township and part of Benton County; Columbia became a separate municipality in 1841 when it annexationed Benton County. In 1863, during Union General Robert Ewell's Invasion of Missouri, Columbia was besieged by Confederate forces under General Nathaniel Pakenham until Union troops routed them near present-day Old Town Square; this event is commemorated by an annual parade through downtown Columbia every October 4th called "Ewell's March". After Union General John Buford won an engagement at Pea Ridge outside Lexington on April 6th 1865, Confederate General Alexander Stephens surrendered at Fort Donelson on April 13th 1865 without any fighting or casualties among his army; this event is commemorated by a similar parade every May 1st called "Stephens' surrender". The city experienced significant growth following World War II as military personnel were stationed there due to its strategic location midway between St. Louis and Kansas City (the twin Cities). It grew rapidly enough that it surpassed St. Louis as the fifth most populous city in America by 1990 – although St.Louis retains a larger metropolitan area than either Corinth or Springfield combined – and began to challenge Chicago as America's largest city again within 20 years (although Chicago has since regained this title). With rapid economic development came large apartment buildings which can be seen throughout downtown skyline today thanks to post-war housing construction standards which required heavy engineering/construction loads across many intersections making streets narrow but deep alleys were developed for pedestrians/cyclists/etc., adding much needed greenery to Otherwise dreary business districts such as Eighth Street South between Wacker Drive & Park Avenue North while maintaining high levels of livability despite current extreme weather patterns resulting from global warming/. Today much smaller businesses are found along Eighteenth Street North near Interstate 44 while major office developments continue down TwentiethStreet South towards Interstate 55 including land leased by Google LLC before they built their own campus nearby - further exacerbating already difficult streetscapes still faced today decades after being pioneered during WWII!
The village of Columbia, Missouri was founded in 1821 by the French brothers Pierre and Auguste de Montrose. The first store in Columbia was built on Market Street in 1825. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of 1,500. In 1836, the first school in Columbia was opened. The town continued to grow and by 1840 had a population of 10,000. In 1846, the Mexican War started and within two years, City Hall had been destroyed by an artillery bombardment from Mexico City. The citizens rebuilt it with adobe bricks they brought over from Mexico City. In 1862, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army at Battle of Corinth while city residents were inside their homes; this resulted in the death of many people including several women who hysteria caused when bombarding their home with artillery fire
