The town was named after Christopher Columbus, an American explorer and naval officer who died in a shipwreck on November 12, 1492 near Cuba Point on Lake Erie while exploring for new land routes to India and China. The original white settlers came from Kentucky and Virginia. They built log homes in what is now Columbia and laid out roads that connected them all together. By 1830, most of the settlers had left for other places because of economic problems caused by low prices for goods brought overland from Kentucky or Virginia. The few remaining families continued farming until they were forced out by Federal troops during the American Civil War; most of them moved to nearby Harrison County or Randolph County where they formed new settlements. Columbia was platted as a town on January 26, 1861, when it was included within one of two towns established by order of Governor John Chauncey Beall along with Joplin (now Kansas City) as part of his push for more central location for Ozark country following the Kansas-Nebraska Act which legalized slavery in Nebraska Territory without approval from Congress。Beall intended Columbia as an agricultural center that would provide jobs for local farmers and support industry growth in Joplin; however he underestimated how much business expansion would take place outside its boundaries due to railroads connecting Joplin with destinations throughout Illinois and Indiana In 1865 when Union forces captured Springfield after a months-long battle that ended General Robert Ewells attempt to retake Cairo from Confederate General Jubal Early., Much like Springfield's previous occupants before them including former slaves freed via sale or purchase under Johnson’somics - many African Americans served their time behind Yankee lines - so too did many black men born into slave households serve their fellow citizens during this period through various means such as workfare programs organized by officers commanding military forces during Reconstruction rather than directly engaging in combat

Columbia, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jefferson City, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Columbia was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539. The area that would become Columbia was long occupied by Native Americans; they were killed or driven away by early explorers and settlers. In 1821, when Missouri became an United States state, Columbia lay within its boundaries. In 1831, George Stephenson built a railroad from St Louis to Rockville (now Rockford), Illinois and proposed traveling south to Columbia on it. However, this proposal never received serious consideration because of the unstable financial condition of the railroad system at that time. In 1835, James Kapp donated land for what would become Columbias downtown square which became one of the most important civic and commercial centers in early Jackson County. This donation also helped spur development around town as farmers began moving into new areas for farming near Columbia's water supplies and mills located on Mill Creek/Prairie du Lac River.. In 1840, General Andrew Jackson awarded land grants to six men: John Custer, Jesse Jameson (the brother of Indian trader Simon Jameson), Lewis Cass (a Revolutionary War general who served as US ambassador to Spain), William Hogg (founder of Kansas City), and David Benton (the founder of Arkansas). These grants provided much-needed economic stability in the region during times of turmoil such as gold rushes andCivil War battles between Unionists and Confederates.. By 1850, there were over 350 residents living in Columbia with a variety of businesses including groceries stores, lumberyards and dry goods stores along with physician Drury Goode's medical office which served patients until 1892.. Columbia experienced rapid growth following its incorporation into Jackson County in 1865 when territorial governments were established around county lines rather than centrally controlled by federal officials like those at St Louis or Rockville.. During Reconstruction after Reconstruction - an era lasting from 1865 through 1877 - local government services were increased as election laws made it difficult for former Confederate soldiers or their descendants to hold public office except sheriffaltieships or judgeships;; however social unrest often led to charges being filed against political opponents,, resulting in many people leaving town for fear they would be arrested if they returned ..
