The attack killed around 30 people and injured many more including General Robert E. Lee. Columbia was again burned down by Confederate forces in 1865 during another attempt at invading Illinois from Texas led by General Ulysses S. Grant. It wasn't until 1889 that an express train service arrived from St Louis to Columbia which served as a basis for developing one of America's oldest commuter railroads – the Missouri Pacific Railroad (MP). The MP reached Columbia in 1901 and connected with other railways serving Kansas City and Des Moines across Iowa before terminating at Omaha, Nebraska in 1912. In 1938-39, construction began on what would become one of America's largest dams – Gannett Dam – which created Lake Springfield (now Branson) within its boundaries and changed much ofriverine landscape along its course between Rock Island and Jefferson Counties into farmland today
