The town was founded in 1854 by refugees from the 362nd U.S. Infantry Regiment who had been driven out of Illinois by the forces of General Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. Columbia's first store was built on Main Street and became one of the most popular places to buy goods in town because it offered a wide selection of products including groceries, hardware, and clothing items. A post office was established at Columbia in 1857 and remained open until it closed in 1907 due to financial difficulties caused bythe Panic of 1907. In 1865, Columbia saw its first tornado when a severe windstorm swept across the area killing two people and damaging dozens of homes%. The tornado continued to damage properties for several days after landfall before dissipating near Brushy Creek northwest of town center. Columbia has experienced many natural disasters over its history including hurricanes (Mabel in 1954 and Carla in 1961), floods (the March 2006 flood that destroyed much of downtown), earthquakes (a magnitude 5 earthquake occurred on July 30, 1964 which caused extensive damage to buildings within a mile or so of Columbiaschoolhouse complex), tornadoes (including both an EF3 tornado that struck Columbiasouthwest side on August 12, 1998 and one that struck northside just eastof town on May 6th 2005), as well as numerous lightning strikes throughout its history with an average hit rate per year above 20%. However, none have resulted in such widespread destruction as what occurred on November 13th 2008 when an EF5 tornado struck central Columbia dead or injured up to 100 people before dissipating about 5 miles west-northwest ofthe city limits
