Columbia is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Louis metropolitan area. In 1850, Averill Harriman purchased 160 acres (0.8 km²) northeast of town from James McMurray for $500 and renamed it Harrimans' Farmstead after himself and his wife Sarah Moulton Harriman (née Caldwell). The original farmhouse still stands today as part of the University of Missouri–Columbia campus complex known as Old Main Administration Building #1A. In 1863, when Missouri passed a bill legalizing slavery within its borders, Columbia chose to stay free and become known as "the most abolitionist community in America". ensuing years saw many protests against slavery throughout the city by both slaveholders and anti-slavery activists alike; however no real action was taken until 1865 when General Robert ELee surrendered at Appomattox Court House following the American Civil War. On May 8th 1865, Mayor Cargill issued an ordinance abolishing slavery in Columbia City limits effective immediately pending state legislation authorizing Freedmen to own property therein; this ordinance has been cited as one reason why post-war Columbia developed into one of America's most successful black municipalities despite much protestation from white residents throughout its short history although some integration eventually took place during Reconstruction period upon returning African Americans to civil rights status following Reconstruction efforts by local authorities

Additionally, Columbia is home to several high-quality restaurants including Ben& Jerry's Ice Cream Company and Denny's Place hamburgers; two casinos; numerous nightlife venues including O'Hare Airport Marriott hotel chain; three professional sports teams: Chiefs football team (in nearby Overland Park), basketball team from Topeka KS also played their games at MVC until 1978 (when they moved to KC),and now are playing their games at Sprint Center The city is also known for its vibrant arts scene with dozens of galleries and museums located throughout downtown areas like Main Street between 1st Street/Kansas Avenue & 2nd Street/Main Street As well there are numerous small businesses that dot every block or street corner throughout downtown Columbia making it easy to find what you're looking for regardless of size or location

The township was named for Columbia, Scotland, where they had been taken as captives during the Napoleonic Wars. Columbia grew rapidly with a population of around 100 residents by 1840. By 1860, it had reached its peak with a population of over 1,500 people. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), much of Columbia was destroyed by fighting and Union forces burned most of the town before withdrawing. After the war, many settlers returned to Columbia and it continued to grow until it had a population of over 2,000 people by 1880. In 1900, Columbia became an incorporated city and has remained that way ever since. It is now one of the largest cities in Missouri and has played a significant role in both its history and economy.
