Columbia, Mo., is a city in the Ozarks region of central Missouri. The population was 36,752 at the 2010 Census. It is the county seat of Boone County and part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The name Columbia comes from a Shawnee word meaning "place where the corn is". The first Europeans to visit Columbia were traders and fur trappers who explored and traded with Native Americans in what is now Missouri during the 18th century. In 1765, General James Wilkinson founded a military post on the east bank ofthe River Mauretania north ofpresent-day Columbia. Wilkinson named his new settlement after his father-in-law, Sir William Johnson, 1st Baronet of Darnley in Scotland. In 1821, when General Andrew Jackson was elected U.S president, he selected Columbia as one of four locations for his presidential library and museum. Construction on the library began in 1825 but was postponed due to illness by Jackson's successor, Martin Van Buren. The building opened in 1830 and became one of America's most influential national museums. Today it remains an important source of information about American history and culture.

Columbia, Missouri is a town located in the northwestern corner of Columbia County, Missouri. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. A post office has been in operation in Columbia since 1854. The town was named forCOLUMBIA University, which was founded in 1792 by James K. Polk and others on land that would later be donated to the school by Jesse Benton. The first settler in what would become Columbia, Missouri was John Cramer who arrived around 1800. He built a cabin near present-day North Broadway and High Street and started crops and raised livestock until 1814 when he moved south to what is now West Springfield. In 1815 he married Mary Smith who had also come from Kentucky with her family. Cramer's daughter Sarah married Jacob Atchison in 1819 and they bought some land east of Columbia where they set up a small farmstead known as White Rock Creek Station. They worshipped Godfrey & Gabrielle (later Gabriel) Church which had been organized in 1793 by Reverend John Forbes of Lexington, Kentucky as an effort to spread Christianity west of the Ohio River into what are now Illinois and Kansas Territory! By 1830 there were about 20 people living in this area including four families who farmed ten acres each! In 1830 Fenton Hill Road - today's Old State Route 66 - crossed over White Rock Creek Station lands leading directly to Hannibal Smith's gin distillery on the opposite bank of the creek where whiskey was distilled for export purposes before it became illegal statewide in1861! Many farmers took advantage of this new opportunity while others abandoned their holdings because of concerns about Indian raids or other threats!! From this early period on one can see that Columbia grew gradually but steadily due to its location convenient access to transportation including roads such as Fenton Hill Road which led directly to Hannibal Smith's distillery; grain elevators situated at West Springfield (the site today of Fairgrounds Mall); agricultural products such as apples, potatoes, corn etc.; services such as churches (Gabrielle Church being particularly active), schools ( Columbiana Academy being founded circa 1840), stores (Fenton Hill Store being established c 1850) and more importantly its many residents who Opportunistically Supported their local community! Today the town enjoys much continued support from its residents through various events/programs throughout year
