One important event that took place during Mayor George Washington Boggs' (D) administration were two visits by President Franklin D Roosevelt in 1938 and 1944 respectively; both visits were made at an early age for Roosevelt to get firsthand experience about running for office before he ran for president himself in 1940. At this time many new neighborhoods started developing such as Englewood which developed into one of the most vibrant areas in town today thanks largely to FDR's involvement there In 1959 Columbia celebrated its centennial anniversary with festivities including parades and concerts throughout downtown which attracted over 100,000 people including entertainers like Marlboro Man Gene Autry and Harry Belafonte among others
