In 1876 Charles Goodyear patented the first practical non-explosive propellant for this type of gun, also creating the modern cartridge design. By 1886, all major manufacturers had produced their own types of airguns incorporating various propellants andachment devices such as stocks or bipods for support while firing. By 1836, there were over twenty miles (32 km) of wagon roads leading to and from Columbia. In 1837, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the construction of a canal across Arkansas River in order to connect with what was then Mexico City by way of Columbia; this canal became known as the Missouri Pacific Railroad. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Confederate General Robert Ewell to march his army into Missouri after learning that Ewell's forces had landed at Cairo on July 14th in an attempt to take advantage of Union shortages caused by American Civil War casualties; this action led to the Battle of Springfield Armory where Ewell was killed and Union cavalry lost more than fifty men while repelling an attack by Confederate infantry commanded by Brigadier General John Pemberton Columbia saw some heavy fighting during World War I with both German and American units operating within its boundaries In 1950, when it merged with neighboring town Florissant to form Columbian Consolidated School District No 913, Columbian boasted "one school for every three residents" In 2011-12 Columbian achieved "Achievement Status" from Great America Schools Inc., one step below "Superior" status
Columbia was founded in 1811 by James K. Polk and is the county seat of Columbia County, Missouri. The river that forms the town's namesake is named for him. Many of the early settlers were Methodists, who arrived from British North America. The first school in Columbia was built in 1821 by Rev. John Auld and was dedicated to educating African Americans. In 1839, a Presbyterian church was organized in Columbia and soon afterward a large Methodist church also joined forces with the Presbyterians to form one of the most powerful denominations in Missouri.
